“However far away the other may seem.” (nl)
Dear reader,
For the past month, my social media has been flooded with heartbreaking images of men, women, and children navigating the rubble of their devastated land or mourning the lifeless bodies of their loved ones. As a silent witness, I am present in this unfolding nightmare. Rarely in my life have I felt such profound collective sorrow. Silence is not an option.
Initially, some advised me that my efforts are futile, that I can bring about little change. However, I disregarded this advice. If I can reach a few within our social circle, it’s already progress. Ultimately, my aim is to raise awareness among those who continue silently and unknowingly about the injustices in Palestine, as well as in Congo and Sudan.
When the rights of others are violated, it triggers reflection on my own rights. I ponder whether others would be equally willing to stand up for my rights if they were in jeopardy. In such moments, it becomes evident how our rights are always interconnected with those of others.
Fortunately, amidst the shocking images, I also witness friends and acquaintances penning the right words, which feel like gentle embraces. Simultaneously, I see various people openly expressing their anger and concern, creating a profound sense of shared humanity. Advocating for the rights of others is indirectly advocating for our own rights. For human rights.
If I could leave readers with one thought: nurture kindness for both yourself and others, regardless of how distant that other may seem; the world is undergoing a phase of decolonization, liberation, and collective mourning.
With love, Stefanie
